The Washington Monument is situated in Washington DC, it was built to honour George Washington the first president of the United States. It is a 555-foot tall marble structure. It is the world's tallest stone structure and is the tallest monumental column in the world. The Washington Monuments build started in 1846 but was stopped in 1854 and did not restart till 1877 due to numerous reasons such as struggle over control of the monument, civil war and of lack of funds. The monument was not fully completed till 1888.
The monument is situated close to other well known and visited sights, such as the Lincoln Memorial, Capitol etc. This means that you can easily get around on foot once you’ve reached the sight which is accessible by the public transport system.
Opening Times and Admission
The monument is currently closed to visitors due to elevator issues and it is not due to open until 2019, but you can still walk up to and around the perimeter of the monument on foot.
