General Information

Holding the title of the United Kingdom's tallest building is The Shard in London, England. The building was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and gets its name from its design which resembles a shard of glass. The skyscraper stands at 309.8 meters tall, construction began in 2009 and the building was completed and opened by November 2012. The building is used for offices, hotels and residences. The top few floors are used as an observation deck.

Getting there

The closest tube and train station to The Shard is ‘London Bridge’ which is directly next to The Shard. London Bridge bus station is also next to The Shard. The Shard is situated within the congestion charge zone for the city of London, there are a few paid car parks situated close to the skyscraper.

Opening Times and Admission

The best way to visit The Shard is by staying at its hotel. The other way is to visit The Shards observation deck, this is open daily and costs £10 per person. The observation deck offers magnificent views of the city of London.

Better value than the eye


For me this is the better observation deck in London. Higher in elevation and a more open feel to it. Can see more than the eye when the weather is good. Its also a fair bit cheaper too.
