Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, also known as the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is the final resting place of Mao Zedong. Zedong was the chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death in 1976. It is thought that Mao had wished to be cremated but his body was embalmed and placed in a purpose-built mausoleum situated in Tiananmen Square. The memorial is highly popular with locals and foreign tourists.
By subway, take line 1 to Tiananmen East or West stations and walk into the square where the memorial is situated. By bus, take the 2, 6, 103, 109 or 685 bus that all stop close to the memorial.
Opening Times and Admission
Entrance to the memorial is free. The memorial is open daily in July and August, 7am-11am. It is only open six days a week for the rest of the year, 8am-12pm with Monday being the day of closure.
