General Information

The Fortica of Hvar is a fortress on the Croatian island of Hvar. The fortress is situated on a hilltop and dates back to the 13th century with construction beginning in 1282, the Venetians improved and strengthened the fort in 1557. The strengthening of the fort is thought to have saved many lives as the fortress was used by the locals when the Turks attacked their town. Fortica was renovated again by the Austrians in the 19th century.

Getting there

The fortress is open to visitors and accessible by bus or by foot from Hvar Town, the latter is not advised for those who cannot walk long distances or steep inclines as the fortress is on a hilltop.

Opening Times and Admission

It is open to visitors from 8 am to 9 pm and access to the fort costs 30KN for adults and 15KN for concessions. The fortress provides fantastic views over Hvar Town and has a terraced cafe for visitors to enjoy.
