Fort Lovrijenac, also known as St Lawrence Fortress or Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar is a fortress and theatre that is located just outside of the Walls of Dubrovnik. The fortress is famous for the role it played in resisting Venetian rule. The Venetians had planned to build a fortress on the spot the current fort stands in the 11th Century, but were beaten to it by the people of the city, who it is thought erected the fort in a few months and then constantly improved it. The fort has great strategic significance as it overlooks the land and sea entrances to the city. The fort was built in a triangular shape and has three terraces, It has access points through drawbridges. The fort has seen recent fame as it is used in scenes including the ‘Red Keep’ in hit television series Game of Thrones.
Getting to the fort isn't too difficult and it is walkable from the centre of Dubrovnik, but be advised that there is a number of steps when at the fort and the climb up to it is quite steep.

An entrance charge into the fort exists, although it can be included in various tour packages.
