General Information
The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine situated on Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel. It is one of the oldest examples of Islamic architecture having been originally built in 691-92 although its dome was rebuilt in 1022-23 after the original dome collapsed. Its gold plated roof is a more recent addition. It is believed by Muslims that the rock at the centre of the structure is where Prophet Muhammad's night journey to heaven started. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Jerusalem.
